How will counselling help me?

You will be able to

- come along to an initial assessment session to meet me and see my counselling room. This will help you to see if you feel comfortable in the environment and feel able to work with me. This will be between 50-60 minutes.

- meet with me regularly, usually the same day and time each week so we have consistency and routine. Each session will be 50 minutes.

- have a space to talk about things which have been difficult and are making life difficult for you.

- be listened to by someone who is able to be objective and supportive.

- gain useful information about your nervous system and tools to help you manage better.

What is somatic therapy and how does it help with trauma?

Somatic therapy simply means listening to what our body and nervous system is telling us as well as what our mind is saying.

Over time we learn how to be in the world based on the experiences we have had. For instance if we have had to keep under the radar in relationships or family because of fear of being told off, hurt or ignored, our body adapts to this. We stay small. That worked well in those situations but in other places like work, education, new friendships and relationships maybe we need to be more assertive, have a voice, feel less shame.

This is an example of where somatic therapy can help. We can learn to slowly and gently gain our voice back, take up our space in the world through small movements and changes in postures, e.g. gently lifting our head, looking around with our eyes, feeling our feet on the ground.

One of the greatest things about somatic therapy is that it is not re-traumatising. We can work without putting the story of the trauma into words if that is easier.
